i watched whitney houston’s funeral service and loved the sermon completely. several lessons that i learnt from it to share included:
1. stay true to yourself. the preacher, marvin winans, made it clear that he was there to preach, which is what he does every sunday, not to make some special speech for the day. in whatever situation, stay true to who you are, not changing to suit the place in which you find yourself. its also wonderful how real he is even in his style of speaking/preaching.
2. stay true to what you believe. i was impressed that winans preached about Jesus without apology. in a world that very often criticizes christianity, he could have tried to make the message more “acceptable” to the world-wide audience that was watching him but instead he chose to stick with what he believes – in Jesus and in God.
3. if possible, make it count for more than the occasion. marvin winans could have chosen to speak about whitney in his sermon but he made a choice to preach and share a message that will likely have a huge impact for much longer than just that specific occassion.
4. finally, the message itself – prioritize – was a powerful, inspiring message. i loved when he said that God says always “I Gotcha” and we needs to know that deeply and completely. a wonderful way to take on the year! part of it is captured in the video below…
love,love, m
p.s: if you watched the ceremony, what were your thoughts? seems to me that its been basically loved the world over. the reviews and responses all seem so positive. pretty wonderful.
i cried like a baby! esp during the costner speech as he cleared and he said God thought she was good enough. i wailed like a mad woman in my room!
yes, costner’s tribute was amazing completely. great when things touch us deeply enough to make us wail like babies!
